80s CASUALS + AMERICAN APPAREL.

A simple thought put into practice. We wanted a basic hoodie that was competitively priced but was of excellent quality.
American Apparel produce garments that are completely sweatshop free with all manufacturing done in the U.S.A. Founded in 1989 as a wholesale brand supplying screen-printers and fashion brands the company moved into the retail market opening its first store in 2003.
We have taken the brand back to its roots by using their desirable hoodie as a base for our subtle insignia with the 80s Casuals signature embroidery on the lower sleeve and our leather badge on the pocket. Supplies are very limited at the moment with a choice of only 4 colours and a size range of Small to X-Large.

RIPSTOP COTTON NEVADA JACKET

The sample of our new Summer Nevada jacket has arrived. Pics and details to follow in the next day or so.
The jacket is a Ripstop Cotton fabric which will be manufactured in two colours. Burnt Orange and Moroccan Blue which ties in nicely with our Desert theme.
Ripstop cotton means that the fabric is reinforced with Nylon thread during the weaving process. This makes the strong lightweight material extremely durable, therefore preventing tearing and ripping.

TALKING BURBERRY - BRITISH STYLE GENIUS

Taken from the 5 part BBC Programme "British Style Genius" from early last year, we have our very own Jay Montessori giving a brief rundown of Burberrys adoption by 80s Casuals.
The final programme gave a definitive look at British youth cultures from the 50s Teddy Boys through to the Terrace Culture of the 80s. The BBC website still has the programme online with each episode broken down into short clips like the one above.
Follow this link to view more snippets from what was an excellent series.
The Casual era comes under the "Street" part of the menu.

NEW T-SHIRT DESIGN

The last of our new designs for February is now ready for printing. Following on from the success of the Urban Gentry T-Shirt, we have another styled in a similar vein. Fusing the 80s look of Deerstalker and Nike with todays style of Chinos and Jacket, the Fine Couture print will be in stores for the end of February.

NEW DECK POLO

A new colour "Deck Polo" should be in stores at the beginning of February. It's become increasingly difficult to get hold of a good quality Long Sleeve Polo, so 80s Casuals shall be concentrating on this small sector of the market rather than the ubiquitous short sleeve one.
Driven by the growing interest in an all year round Polo, we have produced a Navy colour to be followed throughout the year with a couple of more colours.
Stores who have ordered besides our website include Ran, Red Square and Terraces.

CASUAL T-SHIRT

Sometimes brands should stick to what they are best at. In this labels case Polo T-Shirts and Jumpers, but here is a promotion Shirt that thankfully was never put into production.
It's hard to make out at first but it is a Polo T-Shirt used to promote the Casual side of the brand.
Images used include some Perry Boys pics, copies of The End and photos of The Farm in their heyday. Thanks to The Farms Peter Hooton for the Image.

MENTALITA' ULTRAS - ITALY

Sad news reaches us from Italy about the demise of the streetwear brand "Mentalita' Ultras". The Clothing label [MU] began life in November 1995. In 1996 MU had video reports featured on Television about the Italian ultras culture, which included interviews with various group leaders and several exclusive images of the supporters during the matches in which they had participated.
This outlet enabled the MU crew to travel around Italy forging links with many of the Ultra Groups in different Towns and Cities. These included Brigate Gialloblu Verona, Vigilantes Vicenza, Vecchi Orsi Genoa, Collettivo Autonomo Viola, Official Supporters Piacenza, Commandos Tigre Milan, Fossa dei Leoni Fortitudo Bologna, Ultras Unione VM, Sanitarium Cremona, Boys San Inter, Nord Kaos Udine, UBS, BNA, Viking Juve, Drughi, Mods e Granata Korps Toro.
From 1996 to 1999, before the internet age, MUCREW printed 11 issues of the fanzine:”MU RULES” distributed all around Europe. MENTALITA' ULTRAS® STREETWEAR became part of the culture of those who live the terraces with style, with their philosophy including vocal support, elaborate flag displays and fanatical support both in Italy and Europe. The clothing range included T-Shirts, Sweatshirts and Hats.
In 2006 we were contacted by the label and collaborated on three trainer T-Shirts. The first being a Rom and then, after Italy's 2006 World Cup win, an Italia, before the final of the trilogy being a Trieste.
We wish those involved best wishes for any future projects.

EDWIN JEANS - MADE IN JAPAN

Edwin Jeans have been a staple item in our wardrobe for a few years now due to its quality and craftsmanship. The durable denim stands above anything else in a similarly priced bracket. Using the worlds highest level of technology and quality control Edwin continue to evolve, successfully combining product design and functionality with price.
Last year saw the company record the 5 best selling jeans in Japan. At number 1 was the
"503 Wild Fire". These cold weather wind-proof jeans have a triple layer design featuring denim on the outside, a windbreaker material in the middle with a fabric checkered lining.
The "503" are unavailable in the U.K. at the moment. They are Made in Japan, unlike most of the Edwin on sale on these shores which are Japanese denim but are not manufactured there.
We have managed to secure ourselves a dozen pair from our contact in Japan and we are putting them up for sale on our Ebay site. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260723321001&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_500wt_1156
The personal preference in Japan has been to turn up the jean to display the checkered lining, a trait used on selvedge jeans to show the quality of the garment.

NOSTALGIA ADS

The Nostalgia part of the website has had an up-date recently. Here http://www.80scasuals.co.uk/casualicons.html is were you will find the inspiration for our youth. Advertisements from 1975 - 1988 include iconic brands such as adidas, Diadora, Fila, Ellesse etc plus Store adverts including Lillywhites and Austin Reed.
Sources include Tennis Programmes, Product Catalogues and Magazines.

THINK PINK!!

We sign off a final collaboration with our friends at Fila feeling that we have saved the best till last!
In the past 18 months the re-launch of the iconic Terrinda warm up jacket has been a huge success for both ourselves and Fila. so what else could we sign off with other than this luxurious piece from were our relationship began.
The garment is Limited to just 100 garments, Fila have guaranteed us that a Terrinda in this colour will never be produced again!
Only 60 will be available for retail as Fila are distributing 40 as gifts to staff and customers to celebrate the brands centenary.
Why pink? Well we feel if you had to select a colour to associate with the 80s Casuals movement it would be pink, as before it was adopted by these wedge flicking lads, it was a colour only accepted on effeminates and girls.
Spring/Summer 2011 will see us move in a different direction with Fila as we showcase their 'Club Biella' collection which sees Fila rediscover their more preppy roots once adopted by the European playboy.
Check back soon for price and selling details.

THE DAKAR JACKET - PREVIEW

Our small capsule Spring/Summer Desert Collection is beginning to take shape. We have previewed the "Patagonia Shirt" and have Shorts to follow but here we have our most ambitious project.
The Dakar Jacket takes its inspiration from the "Dakar Rally" and follows the "Challenge" series of Sweatshirts. The Rally is known as the most gruelling off-road race in the world and began in 1979, being run from Paris to Dakar in Senegal. It switched to South America in 2009, for security reasons, running through Chile and Argentina over a two week period. The 2011 event is actually taking place now.
The jacket is designed with the motorcyclist in mind with accessories being easily accessible to the rider. A compass is attached to the left breast pocket and can be on-show or hidden inside the pocket. (In 1982 the then Prime Ministers son, Mark Thatcher, famously got lost for 6 days. no compass?) The inner pocket has a drink pouch which is held in position by 2 velcro strips and can be released and taken out and finally a zip-on Balaclava connects to the inside of the neck collar. The collar itself also has a stored contrast colour hood. The Jacket has the waist adjusters to the outer sides, again for easy accessibility.
The detail is second to none on this piece and again only 100 of two colours will be produced. Midnight Blue and Deep Red (known as the colour of the desert). Expected delivery is April.
More full jacket pics will follow and a list of stockists. Supplies will obviously be very limited and pre-ordering may be advisable.
A second jacket in the range is in the development stage and details will be here as soon as they are available.
